I come from a long line of movie watchers. I’m very proud to have passed that love onto my children and their children.
When I was a kid, you had to go to the movies to see a trailer before the movie came out. Very seldom did they have them on TV. Not the good ones anyway.
I saw my first theater movie when I was 6. It was awful. I thought it was going to be good, but it wasn’t. My mother took me, she said it sounded interesting.
I was supposed to see Born Free. But it had left the theater by then. Instead we saw The Mask. A 1961 horror film starring people I never heard of.
Fast forward to the 70’s. I was old enough to go to the movies by myself. It was a great way to get me out of my grandmother’s hair, as she would say. Also a good way to have some me time, even though it wasn’t called that then.
I had seen some pretty good ones too, those trailer previews worked like a charm. Or so I thought. I was about to watch one of the more popular main stream movies when I saw a movie trailer for a B movie called Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia. It had a great ring to it. I decided to go to see it.
I think I may have lasted 10 minutes, maybe 15. To this day my kids and I use the “15 minute rule” to gauge whether or not we love or hate a recommended movie.
I got up and walked out. Went to the ticket box and asked for my money back. The gentleman who took the money for the tickets was a friend of mine. He looked at me in dismay and shook his head.
“What? You want your money back? I can’t do that! Besides, you wanted to see it!” I nodded my head in agreement and said “Yes Frankie, I know, but I had no idea it was that bad”
The conversation continued. He reminded me that it was a movie about a guy with a head in a bag and I kept insisting for my money back. Believe it or not, he finally gave in.
After I received my refund, I smiled and said thank you. Frankie wasn’t happy at all. He said “wow, you are something else.” I nodded in agreement.
He shoved his hands in his pocket and said “well, you headed home?” I said “ Yep” he said “Ok, see you next weekend? I said “Yep, Mr. Majestyk showing!”
